Michigan, or “America’s Mitten” as I like to call it, has long gotten a bad rap – overly industrialized, a decaying motor city, an overly polluted lake system, etc… Some of it entirely deserved, and even necessary – because the Michigan of today is definitely on the mend.  I wouldn’t recommend the state as a hip pop-culture destination, but as far as camping, hiking, B&B’s, lonely quiet coastlines and sobering, off-the-beaten path wilderness locations… Michigan is hard to beat.

I really liked the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. There’s 8000 feet of exhibits, maps of great shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, and a live webcam video feed to a camera far beneath Thunder Bay which you can control to search for buried treasure. My nieces and nephews loved this one. They were sure they were going to find Nessie too. In Michigan’s upper “thumb” you can also see the massive Tahquamenon Falls which is just the beginning of the 46,000 acres of wildlife refuge there to explore, hike, and camp in.
